Chinese Premier Meets With German Chancellor

Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji met with German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder in Seoul Thursday afternoon, and the two exchanged opinions over issues of common concern.

At the meeting, Zhu said Sino-German cooperation in all fields has been developing very well and that a series of cooperation agreements have been gradually implemented.

Sino-German relations have potential and will continue to improve as long as both sides make the effort, he said.

Sino-German relations will aid the development of Sino-Central European relations, added the Chinese premier, who arrived Tuesday for a six-day visit to Seoul and will attend the third Asia-Europe Meeting, slated for October 20-21.

He said that China attaches great importance to the Conference on Sino-German Cooperation for Environment, as well as German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer's December visit to China.

Schroeder said his government attaches great importance to developing friendly relations with China and is satisfied with the implementation of the agreements signed by leaders of the two countries.

The German government believes the Conference on Sino-German Cooperation for Environment will be successful, said the chancellor, who arrived Thursday morning for the third ASEM meeting, in which leaders from 10 Asian and 15 European countries and the president of the European Union will participate.
