Li Peng Meets Egyptian, Canadian Parliament leaders

The parliaments of China and Egypt should increase contact to develop strategic cooperative relations, said China's Top Legislator Li Peng during a meeting with Ahmed Fathi Sorour, speaker of the People's Assembly of Egypt on Thursday.

As two important developing countries, China and Egypt should increase contact and cooperation in the spirit of the on-going millennium parliamentary conference, said Li, who is the chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC).

Sorour said that he has been advised of China's suggestion on the revision of a draft statement to be issued at the end of the conference, and that he agrees with it.

Some western countries wantonly interfere in other countries' internal affairs under the pretext of "human rights," he noted, adding that the tendency must be carefully apprised.

Sorour also praised China for its success in developing the country in its own way, saying it is a "great undertaking."

Li Peng expressed admiration and appreciation for the important and active role Egypt plays in international and regional affairs as a major power in the Arab world and Africa.

Li also held a meeting with Gildas Molgat, speaker of the Canadian Senate on Thursday. The two leaders agreed to increase cooperation between legislatures of the two countries on bilateral and multi-lateral occasions.

Li is attending the three-day millennium summit of presiding officers of national parliaments, which began here at United Nations headquarters on Wednesday.
