Radiation-Preventing Material Distilled From Vegetables

Chinese scientists have discovered a formula that prevents natural radiation from plants belonging to the mustard plant family, like radishes and cabbages.

The formula, named SP88, was created by scientists at the Shanghai Institution of Plant Ecophysiology with Chinese Academy of Sciences.

The institution has gained a patent for SP88 and will put it into mass production soon, an institute source said.

Scientists with that institution said SP88 can be widely applied to various fields, including relieving the radiation from ionization and electromagnetism, and counteracting the decrease of leukocyte and thrombocyte during the radiotherapy or chemotherapy.

Experiments on calves, mice and fruit flies indicated that SP88 works by restraining the excessive radicals in cells, which damage big molecules and causes the malfunction of cells.

Scientists also validated the function of SP88 by comparing two groups of wheat seeds growing in a satellite, one was immersed in SP88 solution and the other in distilled water. It turned out that the radiation had much less of an ill effect on the former group.
