Monitor of Meteorological Atmosphere to be in Automation

China Meteorological Administration has recently pumped 30 million yuan to launch a project in Qinghai Province, using the most advanced installations of the world for the automation of meteorological station to monitor calamitous weather. This points to that China is going to have the meteorological monitoring system automated within next few years, especially for the monitoring on the ground.

The project is reported to include six standard climate stations, 28 basic weather stations and an automated meteorological station to be equipped with the MILO500 imported from Finland. It is used to gauge the elementary factors of atmospheric pressure, temperature, humidity, wind velocity and direction, precipitation and evaporation and radiation as well over the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. All data materials obtained from the observation will be pooled together through wire and wireless telephone network for use.

The atmosphere probing is part and parcel in the entire work of meteorology. The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is known as the "third pole on the earth" and the atmospheric conditions there exert a very significant influence over the occurrence and changes of the weather in China, and even that of the world.

The climate condition on the Plateau is extremely harsh with frequent occurrences of disastrous weather. To build such a system will help ease working intensity of the meteorological workers and enhance the probing capability of the harsh and rigid weather, thereby summing up experience and setting an example for the construction of modernized weather stations in the country.

The project has already been approved by the State Council, and according to plan, China will put up more than 800 automated meteorological stations throughout the country for the automation of observation and remote probing on the ground.
