Xi'an Braces for Its Busiest Holiday Week

Shaanxi Province, one of the country's tourism industry powerhouses, has been preparing itself for the National Day 7-day holiday, a so-called golden week for tourism that begins on October 1 and ends on October 7.

"During this week-long period, Shaanxi will receive 10 percent, and even as much as 40 to 50 percent in some popular spots, of its total number of tourists for the year, so we have to prepare earlier in every way for the onslaught," said Zhao Dequan, deputy governor of Shaanxi Province.

"We asked all people in all parts of the province to provide better service and ensure good conditions for the coming tourists and make them have a very good time in Shaanxi," Zhao said.

During the Labour Day vacation from May 1 to 7, the first long holiday in China, Shaanxi received an unexpectedly large number of tourists.

In order to make the tourists who come to Shaanxi have a happy time in this "natural historical museum," the local government has taken numerous measures, Zhao said.

Additionally, the province will arrange more than 1,900 extra buses to carry tourists during the holiday, and both Northwest Airlines and the local railway bureau will increase the number of flights and trains to ensure convenient coming and going, Zhao said.

Hotels have been preparing and are now ready with 43,000 extra beds. According to Zhao, the local government is also working to ensure that everyone has a place to stay, preparing 1,000 family inns for the coming tourists.
