China has protested to the State Department the projected sale of weapons to Taiwan.

Ambassador Yang Jiechi registered his government's objection in a meeting Tuesday Washington time with Undersecretary of State Marc Grossman.

Philip Reeker, a State Department spokesman, said it could be described as a "formal protest."
