China to Host World Women's Basketball Championships

The 14th World Women's Basketball Championships are to be staged September 14-25 in east China's Jiangsu Province, organizers announced Monday in Nanjing.

According to the results of a drawing held in Nanjing on Monday, the 16 participating teams including Olympic champions United States and host China have been pooled into four groups of four: Australia, Spain, Argentina and Japan in Group A; Brazil, China, Senegal and Yugoslavia in Group B; United States, Russia, Chinese Taipei and Lithuania in Group C and Group D consists of France, Cuba, Tunis and South Korea.

The championships matches are to be staged in nine venues in Nanjing, the provincial capital, and other cities in the province as Huai'an, Zhenjiang, Changzhou, Suzhou, Taicang, Changshu and Zhangjiagang.

The preliminary matches are set for September 12-16, and quarter-finals, semi-finals and final for September 23-25.

A total crowd of over 300,000 is expected, according to the organizers.
