Chinese President Meets GE Chairman

Chinese President Jiang Zemin said that China and the United States share wide-ranging and important common interests, and China is ready to work alongside the US to develop constructive cooperative relations which will benefit both countries.

Jiang made the remarks here Monday afternoon in a meeting with Jeff Immelt, chairman of the General Electric (GE).

Jiang said that China welcomes the GE and other US enterprises to develop business in China.

Jiang repeated during the meeting the Chinese government's strong opposition to terrorism in any form, and again expressed his sympathy and condolences for the human and property losses brought about by the September 11 terrorist attacks in the US

Immelt said that the harm inflicted on the US people during the September 11 attacks is unprecedented, and the Chinese government's position on anti-terrorism has brought the two nations closer.

Immelt noted that he is optimistic about the prospects for bilateral economic and technological cooperation, and that his company will strive to promote such cooperation.
