Journalist Killed in Afghanistan

A French journalist who worked for Radio France International (RFI) was killed in an ambush on Sunday in northeastern Afghanistan, RFI said.

Johanne Sutton, 34, was on assignment for RFI when she was caught in an attack.

"She was following the Northern Alliance this afternoon. According to our information, she was killed in an ambush by the Taliban," an RFI editor said.

Sutton was unmarried and would have turned 35 on December 1. Her body was identified by an acquaintance in Afghanistan.

Prime Minister Lionel Jospin expressed his sorrow at Sutton's death.

"In my name and that of the government, I send my sincerest condolences to the family of Johanne Sutton and I share the grief of all those close to her, and the loss felt by the community of war correspondents," he said in a statement.
