Senior leader Li Ruihuan called on Chinese writers and artists to create more fine literary and artistic works to enrich the cultural life of the general public on March 7.

Li, chairman of the Ninth National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), also called for further reform to bring into play the initiative and potential of writers and artists so that they can make greater contribution to cultural development of the country.

Talking about cultural exchanges, Li said Chinese culture traces its history to ancient times, and it is wise to keep in mind fine cultural tradition while learning from other cultures.

The chairman made the remarks when he attended a meeting of CPPCC members from the ranks of artists and writers around the country, who are here for the annual session of the national advisory body.

Li listened attentively to the writers and artists who voiced their concerns over a wide range of issues, such as the protection of intellectual property rights, cultural heritage and minority culture, the modernization of traditional culture, education in history and culture, cultural development in the west, and cultural exchanges with other countries.
