Family of Bus Driver Killed by Tigers Receive Compensation

The family of a bus driver, who was killed by three tigers at the Shanghai Safari Park on November 17 last year, received 300,000 yuan (US$36,100) in compensation from the park recently.

Through the intermediation of the Shanghai No.1 Intermediate People’s Court, the two parties reached the agreement and settlement on the matter.

Xu Weixing and 12 other drivers carried more than 500 junior high school students in 13 buses on a tour of the Safari Park Wednesday morning.

At about 10:30 am, when the group entered a tiger breeding area, the bus that Xu was driving broke down. Xu got out of the bus to take a look. Three Siberian tigers attacked Xu. Some 30 minutes later, park keepers arrived and rushed Xu to hospital. Xu died at 11:30 am that morning.

The family of the bus driver sued the zoo for a compensation of three million yuan after the accident.

Park authorities said that Xu should have first contacted park workers.
