Movie Gala to Commemorate Lao She

Lao She Literary Foundation announced in Beijing Wednesday that it will organize a movie gala in commemoration of the late Chinese literary master Lao She, who on February 3 will have been born for 102 years.

Five movies, such as Teahouse, Divorce, Yueya'er, Chinese Ballad Singer, and Rickshaw Boy, are scheduled to be shown at China Children's Arts Theater between February 3 and 5.

Cui Enqing, deputy chairman of the Beijing-based foundation, said that as one of the most important writers in the country's history, Lao She had gained a great reputation both in China and foreign countries.

The writer, who died in August 1966, created the literary style of describing the life of common people using concise Beijing dialect.

So far eight novels written by Lao She have been adapted into film scripts.

The foundation aims to popularize the elite tradition of the Chinese culture and cultivate young literary talents. It granted the first awards for novelists in June 2000.
