Tibet's Economy Grows Rapidly

In the wake of China's national drive to speed up the development of western China, Tibet Autonomous Region recorded rapid economic growth last year.

The economic growth of Tibet increased by eight percent in the first three quarters and is expected to surpass 10 percent in the fourth quarter.

The region invested 6 billion yuan in fixed assets last year, representing over 20 percent rise over the previous year. Construction of 147 new projects covering all aspects of infrastructure commenced.

To avoid the destruction of eco-environment in the course of construction, the region has planted trees on 22,000 hectares of land and set up 13 nature preserves.

Tourism has become a pillar industry, generating 600 million yuan in tourist receipts last year.

Outlining the development of the region's Tenth Five-Year Plan period (2001-2005), a regional government official said Tibet's economy will grow by 12 percent over the next five years and attain the middle level of the country in 10 years.
