Chinese Companies Keen on International Standards

Chinese companies are becoming more enthusiastic about applying for international quality standards as China is poised to enter the World Trade Organization (WTO).

The ISO14000 certificate, an environmental management standard established in 1996, is one of the standards domestic enterprises are aiming at in order to acquire good reputations in the international market.

Statistics show that by the end of 2000 some 510 Chinese firms had acquired ISO14000 certificates.

China is expected to experience fiercer competition after it enters the WTO, and domestic firms are already feeling the pressure to enhance their competitive edge by upgrading their products to reach global standards, experts said.
