First China's Border Town Cultural & Art Festival Is Held

The first Chinese Border Town Art Festival involving economy, trade and tourism is to be held in Maoming City, Guangdong Province from May 25-30. As reported, mayors of some 40-odd cities and representatives from domestic and foreign enterprises will be present at the festival and for business talks.

Co-organized by China Minority Folk Arts Foundation and Maoming Municipal Government and Committee, the gala will bring culture and art, sports, economy, trade and tourism talks into one. During the festival, some domestic and local ethnic art troupes will stage more than 30 performances in the People's Square, theatres, cinemas, and in the development zone, etc.

Meanwhile, some other activities including the 2nd Forum on the City Development----conference on the development strategy of border cities; seminar on the culture of Madam Xian, global Chinese calligraphy contest, exhibition of newspapers and magazines, dragon boat tournament, gourmet festival, exhibition and marketing of high-tech technology and sales of local goods will also be carried out.

Xian Ying (513-603), known as Madam Xian, was an outstanding female politician and strategist in early Sui Dynasty from among hundreds of minorities inhabiting in south China, who made significant contributions to the political stability, national harmony, economic prosperity, and homeland unity in Lingnan Prefecture (including nowadays Hainan). It was she who submitted the memo to the imperial government for permission to establish Yazhou Prefecture on Hainan Island. She is the first yet dearest heroine in the hearts of all the people in Hainan.
