The Hong Kong-based Nortel Networks announced Thursday that it was selected by Omnitel Vodafone to supply wireless Internet infrastructure equipment and services for its third generation universal mobile telecommunications system (UMTS) in Italy.

According to an agreement signed Tuesday, Nortel Networks will supply radio access infrastructure for deployment in the Omnitel Vodafone UMTS network beginning later this year.

"This is an important win for Nortel Networks in the strategically significant Italian market," said Pascal Debon, president of Nortel Networks in Europe, Middle East and Africa."

"Added to our 3G wins in the UK, Germany, Spain and Austria, this demonstrates continued customer confidence in our ability to deliver and implement 3G networks to key European markets in a cost-effective manner," Debon said.

Nortel Networks has previously announced UMTS awards from BT Cellnet and One 2 One in the UK, Airtel and Xfera in Spain, T- Mobile in Germany, Max mobile in Austria, and AT&T Wireless in the United States.

Nortel Networks is a leading global Internet and communications company, with capabilities spanning optical wireless, local and personal Internet and e-business.
