Logistics Gets More Logical

China will improve its logistics industry, a burgeoning industry, by combining the network of foreign trade, transportation and information, Shi Wanpeng, vice-minister of the State Economic and Trade Commission, said yesterday.

The commission, together with the China Communication and Transportation Association, held a forum to discuss how to improve efficiency in logistics.

Chinese senior officials said the central government will issue laws and regulations to guarantee that the logistics industry will grow following market economy.

"Both the central and local governments will take measures to forbid monopoly in the business," Shi said.

In order to meet the challenges the World Trade Organization will bring, he said all governmental administrations involved in logistics should adopt international practices.

China's foreign trade administrations should enhance efficiency in registration, issuing licences, imposing taxes, and inspecting import and export products, he added.

Weng Mengyong, vice-minister of the Ministry of Communications, said China will expedite the planning and construction of infrastructure in order to push the development of logistics.
