Senior Party Leader on Combating Corruption

A senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Wednesday stressed that CPC committees and governments at all level must work hard to prevent and curb corruption from the source.

Wei Jianxing, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, said further promoting the nationwide anti-corruption campaign is a major guarantee for development in the next five years.

Wei, also secretary of the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, made the remarks at a group discussion of Heilongjiang deputies to the National People's Congress on Premier Zhu Rongji's report on the draft outline of China's tenth five-year plan for economic and social development for 2001-2005.

To prevent and curb corruption from the source, Wei said, efforts should focus on strengthening ideological and ethical education of Party members and officials and further promoting the reform of various systems so as to eradicate the root cause of corruption.

He also stressed that efforts should continue to severely punish corrupt officials, develop a democratic style of work within the CPC, improve the legal system and establish an effective supervisory system.

The campaign against corruption should be taken into consideration when major policies, laws and regulations are being drafted in the future, he said.
