Red Cross Day Commemorated

Qiu Yi (right in the photo), a primary school student from Shanghai, donates money to help children suffering from leukemia. The girl is responding to an activity organized by Xiuhui District Red Cross of Shanghai to mark the World Red Cross Day today.

This year's theme for the Day is "The power humanity. Welcome the new century."

In 1948, the International Committee of the Red Cross decided that May 8 is the World Red Cross Day. The day was chosen because it was the birthday of Henry Dunant, one of founders of the International Committee of the Red Cross.

Medical departments across China have organized lots of activities to commemorate the day, including free medical consultation, psychological consultation, blood donation, equipment maintenance, and fund raising for disabled people.
