Genius Ballerina Tan Yuanyuan Returns Home

Tan Yuanyuan, internationally renowned ballerina of the San Francisco Ballet, will stage a performance next Sunday in her native city of Shanghai.

Tan will be accompanied by nine other dancers from the US ballet troupe, which has attracted dancers from various countries including Cuba, France, Russia and Britain.

Scenes from "Giselle", "Sleeping Beauty" and "Swan Lake" will be performed, along with pieces by choreographer George Balanchine and the troupe's artistic director Helgi Tamasson.

Tan won three awards within a year and half of graduating from Shanghai Dance School at the age of 15.

She first displayed her talent to the world in a competition in Helsinki, where one critic said she "approached perfection". She went on to win two gold medals in France and Japan.

Tan joined the San Francisco Ballet in 1994 and soon became principal dancer. She and the troupe have toured over 20 countries.
