China to Host 1st International Conference on Volunteer Service

China will host the International Conference on Voluntary Service on May 27-28, to follow up the International Year of the Volunteer in 2001, marking an important step in raising Chinese voluntary service to international standards.

The meeting, with the theme of voluntary service in the new century, will be attended by more than 160 volunteer experts and representatives.

The meeting, with speeches and discussions, aims to strengthen understanding of voluntary service among the public, encourage public support and participation, and promote a sustainable development of the service in China and worldwide.

The meeting will showcase the achievements of Chinese voluntaryservices in recent years, and invite participants to discuss theirrole in economic and social development and their future.

During the meeting, a statement will be released and participants will attend activities like tree planting and artistic performances.
