2 Dead, 12 Missing in Boat Crash

Two people were killed and 12 are missing as two ferries crashed on the Yangtze River in Fengjie county in Chongqing city Thursday.

One of the ferry, "Duyun No.9", with 23 people on board, sunk immediately after the crash. Nine people were rescued. Two people drowned and 12 went missing.

The people on the other ferry "Chuanhong No.518" remained safe.

The majority of the people who died and are reported missing are farmers from Outang and Dabao villages in Fengjie county.

Both of the ferries were run by local private ferry companies.

According to official statistics, 111 people were killed in 37 boat accidents in the Fengdu-Badong section of the Yangtze River last year.
