Relations With Developing Countries

On February 4, 2004, visiting Chinese President Hu Jintao said in Algeria that China has been and will continue to be a reliable friend to developing countries, and China is willing to promote friendly cooperation in all areas with developing countries, based on deep traditional friendship and wide common interests.

For a long time, China has carried out fruitful cooperation with developing countries in all fields, adhering to the principle of equality, and mutual benefit, and paying attention to actual effect, long-term cooperation and common development. Consolidating and developing unity and cooperation with developing countries is the foundation of China's foreign policy. President Hu pointed out that developing countries account for 90 percent of the world's total population and 84 percent of the UN members' aggregate. So, developing countries are of great significance in dealing with international affairs, especially in the process to build a fair and rational new international political and economic order. It is safe to say that there will be no world peace if there is no stability in developing countries and there will be no worldwide prosperity if there is no rejuvenation of developing countries, he added.

The Chinese president pointed out it needs wide international cooperation to realize development. He called on developing countries to strengthen unity, safeguard their own interests in the process of building a new international political and economic order and try to promote economic globalization in the direction favorable to realizing common prosperity. At the same time, Hu suggested that developing countries should actively explore new ways and measures to effectively carry out South-South cooperation under new situation. He also stressed that developed countries bear unshakable responsibility to narrow the gap between North and South, and they should fully consider the interests of developing countries, take practical measures in opening markets, developing trade and increasing aid.
