20 The Conferring Ceremony of the 2003 State Preeminent Science and Technology Award is held in Beijing, co-sponsored by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the State Council. Liu Dongsheng, a geologist with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Wang Yongzhi, a space scientist with the Chinese Academy of Engineering and chief designer of China's first manned spacecraft, won the country's top science award. A special prize of the State Scientific and Technological Progress Award was conferred to China's manned space flight project.
