Underground Dates: New Fast Food for the Young?
Adjust font size:

A recent speed-dating session arranged for 30 Shanghai white-collar workers that took place on the platforms of the city's underground system has led to media comments on what a date should be like in modern society.

The speed-dating session gives the 15 male and 15 female participants just 20 minutes to chat and get to know each other before moving on to the next potential partner. A commentary in the Beijing Youth Daily says this new dating concept is creative and romantic. It represents young people's expectations of having a simple lifestyle.

At the same time, however, the article criticizes the event, calling it a "fast-food game." It doubts whether such short exchanges between people can lead to a serious relationship. It also argues young people should dedicate more time to their personal affairs.

The newspaper also assesses burdens from life, work, family and changing environments are all the factors leading to such a lifestyle shift.
