Xiamen Mayor Vows to Fight Against Corruption

Xiamen Mayor Zhu Yayan said Sunday the city government will take solid measures to fight against corruption after a multi-billion US dollar smuggling case has been seriously handled.

In an interview with journalists from 10 foreign media organizations including AP, Reuters and Kyodo, Zhu said smuggling and corruption are global hard nuts but the Xiamen city government will draw lessons from the Yuanhua Group's smuggling case.

Zhu, also vice governor of Fujian Province, said four principal measures will be taken to this effect, including strengthening education of civil servants, taking a firm stand on cracking down on smuggling while deepening opening-up, improving the management and supervision of cadres, and establishing and improving various rules and regulations on government administration.

He explained the exhibition at the office building of Yuanhua Group was closed ahead of schedule mainly because the facilities in the seven-story building decorated with red mosaic could not accommodate such a large number of visitors. After all the purpose of the show has been fully realized, he said, adding that the property of Yuanhua Group will be properly handled according to law.
