China to Build First PRT Production Line
The Hitachi Monitor Group announced to set up a new joint venture in Shenzhen, and build the first Project Ray Tube (PRT) production line of Rear Projection TVs in China.

China has become one of the areas that have the fastest growing demand of Rear Projection TVs so far. In a bid to satisfy the mushrooming demand of the Chinese market and enhance its competitive edge, Hitachi decided to expand its business in China and build a PRT production base.

Compared with other tubes such as liquid crystal, PRT has lower prices, higher definition and more convenient ways of maintenance.

The PRT products of Hitachi has covered 50 percent of the market shares worldwide, and it aimed at holding 60 percent in the near future.

The new joint venture will be built in the Longgang Industry Zone of Shenzhen, in South China's Guangdong province, with an investment of some US$29 million. The new joint venture will introduce the first PRT production line to China, which has the highest standard in the world.

The production line is expected to go into operation by July next year, and the company is expected to have an annual output of 1.3 million PRTs by 2004.
