Chongqing Launches New Plan to Move Residents
Chongqing Municipality in Southwest China is planning to move out 21,700 residents this year for the construction of the giant Three Gorges Power Project.

According to Wang Xingyu, in charge of the resettlement work in Chongqing, 19,370 out of this group will move to other 11 provinces and municipalities, including Shanghai, Guangdong and Anhui. Another 2,330 residents will be relocated to other districts and counties of the municipality.

The number of residents who registered for the resettlement this year exceeded the expected number.

According to earlier reports, the State Council in 1999 decided to move out a total of 120,000 residents from the Three Gorges area. Some 100,000 of them will be from Chongqing.

So far, Chongqing has moved out a total of more than 90,000 people.
