US Axcelis Opens Shanghai Facility
Axcelis Technologies, Massachusetts-based maker of hardware and software for semiconductor manufacturers, has opened a new facility in Shanghai to bolster its presence in China and provide a base in the Asia-Pacific region.

The new facility gives Axcelis' customers direct access to equipment, services and support in a market that is widely expected to be the second largest for semiconductors by 2010.

"Axcelis has held a leadership position in China for the past 20 years through our partnership with Tritek, and we look forward to expanding that role as the market continues to develop and thrive," said Mary Puma, Axcelis' president and CEO.

Andrew Lee, managing director of Axcelis Technologies China and a veteran of the Chinese semiconductor industry, will manage the operation, which will also house a local sales office.

The company also has a presence in Chinese Taipei, Korea, and Singapore as well as in Japan, through its joint venture with Sumitomo Eaton Nova.
