Thousands of passengers booked on Australia's Qantas flights bound for the United Kingdom on Monday continued to stuck in Asia, while London's Heathrow Airport in Britain remains closed by snow.
Heathrow, the world's busiest international passenger airport, remained paralyzed due to ice on the tarmac, with no flights coming in and only a handful leaving.
Flights have also been canceled in and out of Paris of France, Frankfurt of Germany, Amsterdam of The Netherlands and Brussels of Belgium, as snow and ice disrupt travel plans across Europe on the last weekend before December 25.
According to a Qantas spokesman, about 1000 Australia-bound passengers remain in limbo and face lengthy delays while a backlog of flights is cleared.
"We still have two aircraft on the ground in London waiting to depart and we also have aircraft waiting in Asia, pending further advice from Heathrow," he told Australia Associated Press on Monday.
The spokesman said eight Qantas aircraft that have departed Australia during the past two days are waiting in Bangkok, Singapore and Hong Kong for clearance to land at Heathrow.
He said as the weather conditions are improving, an update from Heathrow was expected soon.
