History of Earth Day

Core issues of Earth Day in 2010

For over 40 years, Earth Day—April 22—has inspired and mobilized individuals and organizations worldwide to demonstrate their commitment to environmental protection and sustainability.

On April 22, more than one billion people around the globe will participate in Earth Day 2012 and help Mobilize the Earth™. People of all nationalities and backgrounds will voice their appreciation for the planet and demand its protection.

Earth Day 2011 supported the UN International Year of Forests 2011 and is a pivotal opportunity for individuals, corporations and governments to join together and create a global green economy.

Even though emissions have grown rapidly since 1990, China has managed to significantly reduce its emissions intensity (emissions per unit of GDP). In 2009, China announced plans to reduce the intensity of carbon dioxide emissions per unit of GDP in 2020 by 40 to 45 percent compared with the level of 2005.
