Their keeper said construction debris and tree branches had caused the blockage.

In hot weather, hippos have to remain in water to keep cool, but if the water is dirty the hippos are prone to intestinal and respiratory diseases, according to animal health experts.

Experts said the two hippos could not go into the dirty water and sweated blood from their ears because of dehydration, which can kill them if left unattended for a long time.

The two hippos, a male and female, were in good health when they first came from Nanning, capital of Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region.
