A two-day meeting of environment ministers of the Community of Portuguese Language Speaking Countries (CPLP) was opened here on Tuesday to map out strategies for wastes treatment as part of sustainable development policies and to share new technologies and experiences in the nine-member bloc.

The meeting was attended by the ministers of Angola, Cape Verde, Portugal, Sao Tome and Principe, while Brazil, Mozambique and Timor-Leste were represented by diplomats accredited in Angola.

The first day of the meeting, chaired by Angolan Environment Minister Maria de Fatima Jardim, focused on the political framework of waste management in the CPLP and presentations of experiences of some member countries, including Portugal, Cape Verde, Sao Tome and Principe, as well as presentations of innovating solutions for the wastes.

Held under the theme "Handling Waste-Defending the Future," the meeting will seek solutions to the problem of waste management in the community on the basis of the experiences of each state and technological innovations.

The meeting will discuss issues related to wastes innovating solutions, waste integrated and sustained management, quality of water and the role of the private sector in environmental planning and protection.

The forum was held upon an initiative of the ministry of Angola, which is currently holding the two-year rotating chairmanship of the CPLP.

Speaking to reporters before the meeting, Portuguese Minister of Environment Dulce Passaro stressed the need for governments to understand that there is no real development without the preservation of environment, and governments must keep pace with the great environmental concerns of the world, including climate changes and preservation of biodiversity.
