The average temperature was 79.3 degrees in Fahrenheit (26.28 degrees in Celsius), said Steve Freitag, a meteorologist at the weather service office in White Lake Township. That broke the old mark of 79 degrees in Fahrenheit (26.11 degrees in Celsius) in 1955 and 1921.

The wettest was in 1878 with 8.76 inches (22.25 centimeters) of rain, the weather service reported Sunday. Detroit received 7.66 inches (19.46 centimeters) in July.

The unrelenting July heat will keep rolling into August. Temperature will reach 90 degrees in Fahrenheit (32.22 degrees in Celsius) on Monday, while Tuesday might get as high as 92 degrees in Fahrenheit (33.33 degrees in Celsius), according to the weather service.
