The 2011-2012 weak to moderate strength La Nina conditions in the tropical Pacific has already turned neutral by early April, according to latest updateby the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) on Wednesday.
Model forecasts and expert opinion suggest that neutral conditions are likely to continue into the Northern Hemisphere summer (austral winter), with neither El Nino nor La Nina prevailing.
However, beyond July 2012, outlooks are less certain. A redevelopment of La Nina currently appears unlikely, while the chances for persistence of neutral conditions or the development of El Nino are enhanced and at this point in time are of approximately equal likelihood.
WMO says the situation in the tropical Pacific will continue to be carefully monitored. More detailed interpretations of regional climate fluctuations will be generated routinely by the climate forecasting community over the coming months and will be made available through the National Meteorological and Hydrological Services.
