French oil giant Total on Monday confirmed the success of operations to stop gas leak in the platform of Elgin in the North Sea.

In a statement posted on its website, the French group said it pumpted heavy mud into G4 well from the semi-submersible drilling rig West Phoenix to regain the control of the damaged platform.

"Following the success of the well intervention, the next phase will be to re-man the Elgin complex and restart the Rowan Viking drilling rig in order to set cement plugs in the G4 well," Total said.

Costs of the gas leak which had occurred on March 25 in Elgin complex, 240 kilometers from Aberdeen in the British North Sea, will be up to 400 million euros (510.81 million U.S. dollars), the group noted in a previous report.

"Now, it is important that we continue to work together with the authorities to conclude the ongoing investigations, take into account lessons learnt and define the necessary conditions for restarting production of the Elgin-Franklin fields," said Yves-Louis Darricarrere, Total's head of exploration and production.

Operating in 130 countries, Total represents the fifth largest publicly-traded integrated international oil and gas company in the world. It posted 17-percent rise in its adjusted net income to 15.9 billion euros last year.
