The Philippine government said on Friday that the number of those killed due to flooding and heavy rains caused by tropical storm Saola (local name Gener) climbed to 37.

National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) executive director Benito Ramos said the latest 11 victims were mostly children who drowned when they went swimming in the sea even if there were strong waves.

In a television interview, Ramos said the government gave repeated warnings about the dangers of venturing out to sea whenever there are storms but it was apparent that some did not heed their advisory.

Meanwhile, Ramos said four people remained missing as tropical storm Saola continues to move away from the Philippines.

The NDRRMC said over 111,000 families or about 519,000 people were affected by the storm. Some 50,600 families or 231,000 individuals are being served in evacuation centers.
