A medical student was killed and four other people including three tourists were injured Wednesday after a snow avalanche hit them in Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.

The avalanche hit these people at Thajwas glacier near village Sonamarg, around 110 km north of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"A student of Jehlum Valley Medical College of Srinagar came under snowslide and died on the spot in Sonamarg area," said a police spokesman. "Other three tourists and a local boy who received injuries in the incident were rescued and hospitalized immediately."

The deceased student was identified as Zubair Ahmad Chowdary.

Kashmir has a rugged terrain. Landslides and avalanches are often triggered by its mountains due to frequent rains and heavy snowfal.
