Nine people were killed and at least another six were wounded by an avalanche in the Alps' Mont Blanc region, local media reported on Thursday.
The incident occurred at Mont Maudit, the third highest mountain in the Mont Blanc massif near French and Italian borders, according to the ANSA news agency.
Citing official data, French broadcaster Europe 1 said 6 people were injured in the deadliest avalanche in years in the French Alps. An undetermined number of skiers were reported missing.
Earlier reports by ANSA said a total of eight people were injured.
More than 20 people from France, Switzerland, Spain, Germany and Serbia are believed to have take part in the climbing expedition.
Mountain rescue teams have been dispatched to search for victims.
