Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said Saturday that Spain would ask for aid from the European Union (EU) following the floods which have devastated parts of the south-east of the country over the past 48 hours.
Speaking at a meeting of his Popular Party in the Basque city of Vitoria, Rajoy transmitted his solidarity with the affected families for the "dramatic events," adding they would receive the "support and affection"of the government.
Rajoy said the government would ask the EU for economic aid to try and help the recovery of the area.
Rajoy's words were echoed by opposition leader, Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba, who said his Socalist (PSOE) Party would take, "all of the parliamentary initiatives possible," to assure the region recived aid.
Rubalcaba added he had spoken to the European Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs asking for help. "There are European programs for this kind of help," confirmed the PSOE leader.
At least 10 people have died, while a further two are missing as a result of the heavy rainfall which has devastated towns in the provinces of Malaga, Granada, Almeria, Lorca and Murcia.
