Floods provoke 10 deaths in south-east Spain

A total number of of 10 people have died as the result of heavy rainfall to hit the south-east of Spain over the last 48 hours.
Five of the victims died in the Community of Murcia, three of them including a nine-year-old girl lost their lives when part of a bridge on the A7 east coast motorway collapsed.
A sixth victim was found near to the city of Lorca on Saturday after she had been swept away by rising floodwaters.
Meanwhile a man and a woman died in their car after being trapped by floods in their car in the municipality of Guazamara de Cuevas del Almanzora in the province of Almeria.
A further 2 victims, including a 60-year-old man, also died in Almeria. The victim, who had a heart complaint, suffered a heart attack as he was being evacuated in helicopter.
The floods had claimed their first victim early Friday when rainfall caused the river Guadalahorce broke its banks close to the town of Alora, which is north of Malaga.
Apart from the fatalities the floods have caused widespread damage with homes, garages and basements flooded and streets under water.
The Spanish Military's Emergency Unit has been called to help with the situation and over 5,000 people have been evacuated from several points of the south-east.
