As a result, nearly 1,000 flights have been canceled in Chicago, Chicago Tribune reported.
Chicago Metra has also canceled one afternoon train on its Metra Electric District Line; and dozens of schools are closed or are planning to close early.
The weather service warned that by the afternoon, snow will become intense intermingled with high winds and will fall at an inch and a half per hour at times.
The storm is likely to be the biggest snowfall in a single day in March in more than a decade, said the weather service, just enough to turn around a dry winter.
The Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation has dispatched more than 280 trucks to salt and clear the city's main streets, and the Illinois Tollway has activated 182 snowplows, Chicago Tribune reported.
