The late winter storm that slammed the Balkan region on Tuesday brought heavy snowfall and strong winds to Serbia, snarling traffic throughout the country especially in the north, reported Radio Television Serbia (RTS).
One person was killed and five taken to hospital in a two-car collision on a highway near a village just south of Zrenjanin, about 70 kilometers north of Belgrade. The icy road condition was considered the major factor of the accident.
According to the Serbian meteorological service, 11 centimeters of snow fell in Palic, just south of the Hungarian border.
Due to adverse weather conditions, columns of transport trucks several kilometers long have formed at the border crossings with Hungary. Vehicles were required to have winter equipment and use chains.
