At least 12 people were killed and eight others injured on Monday when a landslide engulfed a bus in an eastern Mexican town. |
A baby and two women were among the victims in the tragedy in Altotonga, a town in eastern Veracruz state, according to the state's civil protection agency.
Military and civilian rescuers joined hands to search for survivors, and state Governor Javier Duarte de Ochoa has sent condolences to the families of the victims.
The calamity was just the latest as two powerful storms, Ingrid and Manuel, ravaged Mexico's Gulf coast with torrential rains. At least 22 others had been killed, according to a preliminary report from the National Coordinator of Civil Protection.
Across Veracruz, around 23,000 people were evacuated from their houses and 9,000 remained in emergency shelters, according to the governor.
Although rains are still battering the country, Ingrid has already entered the dissipation process, the National Weather Service Forecast said.
