A 23-day-old giant panda cub made its first public appearance in front of journalists at the Chimelong Safari Park in the south China city of Guangzhou yesterday.

The female weighs 856 grams, is gaining on average a daily 30 grams, and is in "ideal health," Dong Guixin, the park's general manager, said.

The new mother, 10-year-old Ting Ting, was born in a breeding center in Wolong in southwest China's Sichuan Province and moved to the park after the May 2008 Sichuan earthquake.

As of late 2013 there were about 1,860 giant pandas living in the wild nationwide, mostly in Sichuan, according to the latest figures released in February. About 380 others live in captivity in China.
