A new report on actions and achievement that China has made in desertification control, poverty alleviation and the fight against climate change in the Kubuqi Desert will be delivered on Dec. 1 during the Paris climate change conference.

"The Report on Ecological Wealth Creation in China's Kubuqi Desert" will be released during the "Addressing Desertification and Actively Fighting against Climate Change--China's Kubuqi Forum on Ecological Wealth Creation Model", a conference which will be jointly held by several UN agencies. More than 150 representatives from around the world will attend the conference.

The Kubuqi ecological development model, which is developed by the Elion Resources Group, a global leaderin desertification control, has been attracting worldwide attention.

The report, by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), Peking University and several other international agencies, points out that the Elion Resources Group has effectively utilized desert solar energy and space over the past 27 years in a bid to create a new comprehensive model by integrating ecological remediation, husbandry, health, tourism, solar energy and ecological industry.

Given what the Elion Resources Group has achieved so far, the enterprise is considered a pioneer in creating a "sixth industrial revolution." Following a path of integrating four factors, namely desertification control, ecological development, economy and people's livelihood, the Elion Resources Group has set up an excellent example for global fight against desertification, climate change, poverty and biodiversity decline, experts agree.

It is reported that Elion has transformed more than 12,700 square kilometers of desert back into green land in both the Kubuqi Desert and the areas along the Silk Road Economic Belt, reducing sand storm frequency by 95 percent.

Moreover, biological species in this area have grown tenfold and the precipitation has increased fivefold. The average height of dunes has also been halved. Elion's action to fight against desertification has provided jobs for over a million people and helped about 100,000 farmers and herdsmen living in the desert area eradicate poverty. It has set up a world-class "Kubuqi Model" with Chinese characteristics.

The "Kubuqi Model" provided some suggestions for dealing with the four difficulties—environment, poverty, species and climate--facing human society, as it demonstrated that the "three conventions" (the Convention on Climate Change, the Convention of Biological Diversity and the Convention to Combat Desertification) proposed by the United Nations in 1992 are closely related.

The fight against desertification has a positive influence on the ecological environment, biodiversity, poverty alleviation and will significantly limit global warming.

The United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification predicted that over 50 million people would be forced to migrate due to the desertification of their habitats by 2020. People around the world need to turn 12 million hectares of degraded land back into healthy land annually in the years to come.

Kubuqi practices in combating desertification have drawn attention from the UNEP, the UNCCD and other authorities. In 2014, the UNEP designated the Kubuqi Desert as "Global Ecological Economic Pilot Zone."

The Kubuqi model, which is highly operable and sustainable, will provide a good reference for coping with global ecological difficulties in a bid to boost unified actions against desertification.
