In order to promote environmental protection awareness throughout the world, the UNEP has invited three international celebrities from film, arts and business sectors. In addition to Gong Li, the Grammy Award-winning Beninese singer and songwriter Angelique Kidjo and Virgin Atlantic Airways chief Richard Branson have also been invited as ambassadors and to take part in environmental protection posters, which will be officially released on World Environment Day, on June 5th of this year.

On these posters, in addition to calls for global reductions in carbon dioxide, Gong Li also says: "I am Gong Li. In today's fast-developing world, the way we produce and consume is creating vast amounts of waste. This trend will become a serious threat to the environment if we don't stop it. In China, I have submitted a proposal on environmental protection to the public, and I call on citizens of all countries to work together with their leaders to protect the environment. "

This year, UNEP focuses on greenhouse gas emissions reduction. The "Kick the Habit" campaign offers alternative lifestyle choices that promote low carbon economies including investments on improved energy efficiency, renewable energy sources, forest conservation, and eco-friendly consumption.
