China's performing artists and other well-known figures showed their love and generosity in a televised gala Sunday night, donating more than 1.51 billion yuan (about US$216 million) for quake-hit areas.

The gala, held and broadcast live by China Central Television, was predominated by the condolence for quake victims and encouragement for those who are still battling against all odds to save lives.

More than 32,000 people have been confirmed dead in the 8.0-magnitude earthquake hitting Sichuan Province in southwest China, the worst natural disaster in decades.

"All performers have only one wish: to offer encouragement and heart-felt support for the disaster-hit people," director Sun Bin said.

Li Changchun, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, attended the gathering.
