South Africa confirms second death from A/H1N1 flu
Adjust font size:

South Africa's second death from the A/H1N1 flu in the country's judicial capital Bloemfontein was confirmed by the health department on Friday.

However, Fidel Hadebe, the spokesman of the health department, could not provide further information.

On Wednesday, the department said the recent death of a 44-year- old KwaZulu-Natal man could not conclusively be linked to swine flu.

The man's death was initially thought to be the second death in the country.

Until Friday, only the death of 22-year-old Stellenbosch University student Ruan Muller was directly linked to the H1N1 virus based on laboratory confirmation by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases(NICD).

The A/H1N1 flu was first recorded in Mexico in June this year.

On Aug. 3, NICD put the number of the A/H1N1 cases in South Africa at 480.
