Nepali police arrest 70 Tibetan separatists
Adjust font size:

Nepali police on Thursday detained some 70 Tibetan separatists involved in anti-China activities in the Nepali capital Kathmandu.

Around 80 Tibetans staged a protest at 16:00 local time (1000 GMT) on Thursday afternoon outside the visa office of the Chinese embassy in Nepal, located in downtown Kathmandu, shouting anti-China slogans and scattering anti-China banners and posters on the street.

The demonstrators, who are seeking "Tibet independence", blocked the traffic and most of them were detained by Nepali police shortly after the demonstration.

"Some 70 of them were detained," a Nepali policeman on the spot told Xinhua.

Some Tibetans in Nepal, backed by those from India, have been launching almost daily anti-China protests since mid-March.

The protests were only temporarily halted during Constituent Assembly elections on April 10.

Even on May 12, when China's southwestern Sichuan province was hit by an 8.0-magnitude earthquake, and during the following days, some Tibetans continued their protests outside the Chinese embassy.
